Panel highlights the importance of music supervisor
What is the role of a music supervisor? How to get the attention of this professional? What do I need to know to work in this area? These were the questions answered during one of the panels on the first day of the Brasil Music Summit: Sync & Music Branding, an event promoted by Brazil Music Exchange (BME), a project of exporting Brazilian music made through a partnership between Brasil, Música & Artes (BM&A) and Agência Brasileira de Promoção de Exportações e Investimentos (Apex-Brasil). The discussion was moderated by Mário Di Poi from Inputsom Arte Sonora and composed by Geoff Siegel from Fundamental Music, the professional Marthe-Helene Heraud, Caroline Arenas from Audionetwork and Luiz Buff from 1M1 Arte.
Marthe-Helene spoke of the need for the supervisor to have a very broad musical culture, a network of intense relationships, market knowledge and a lot of repertoire. Luiz stressed the importance of knowing musical copyrights and how the whole legal process works. “You need to have access to search tools to know who owns each song”, he said.

The professionals also talked about the potential of Brazilian music for this market and emphasized the quality of our production. For Carolina, the musical supervisors who work here need to understand that there is a lot of good and little explored music. “Jazz, for example, is surprising. You have to make things happen instead of waiting for opportunities to come”, she said. Geoff added, “the musical talent is here, but it has to get to Los Angeles”.
